High School Cheerleader Told to ‘Cover Up’ While Wearing Uniform in Class

High school cheerleader told to 'cover up' while wearing uniform in class

A Michigan high school cheerleader’s mother is upset after her daughter was told to cover up at school, even though she was wearing a team-issued uniform. Amanda Alburg couldn’t believe it when her daughter, Marianah, was asked to put on pants when she arrived at Pinconning High School in her cheerleading uniform.

“I called the school office, and I was told that they are to wear pants under their uniforms at all times. It is a distraction to the boys,” Alburg told WNEM. This left Alburg wondering why the uniform was considered acceptable for games but not for school.

According to Marianah’s mother, the cheerleading coach instructed the girls to wear their uniforms to school on the day of a home basketball game, something that has been done for years. Marianah’s mother argued that it shouldn’t be a distraction to the boys and pointed out that girls have been wearing cheer uniforms issued by the school on game days to school for a long time without any issues.

Concerned parents attended a school board meeting on Monday and called for a change in the student dress code. One mother expressed her frustration, highlighting the double standards at play.

“My daughter can’t wear a sports bra to practice because it’s inappropriate, but the gentlemen… they have their shirts off on the soccer field, basketball court, and football field. And that is a double standard and a violation of our girls’ civil rights,” she stated.

Some school board members agreed with the parents and believed it was time for a change. Alburg also supported the idea, emphasizing that if the school’s cheerleading uniforms are deemed appropriate for games, they should also be suitable for school.

While parents continue to fight for a change in the dress code, the superintendent released a statement defending the school’s current policy. The statement mentioned how athletic uniforms, specifically the length of the cheerleading skirts, might not meet the school dress code requirements. The school would not allow any sports team to wear uniforms to school that do not meet those requirements.

What are your thoughts on penalizing girls who wear their sports uniforms to school? Shouldn’t it be logical that if a uniform is acceptable for sports, it should be accepted for school too?
