It has been one year since former President Jimmy Carter entered hospice care, and his family recently shared an updated announcement regarding his condition. This announcement, shared by his grandson Jason Carter on CBS Sunday Morning, comes just three months after the passing of Jimmy’s beloved wife, Rosalyn.
Despite facing end-of-life care for the past 12 months, President Carter was able to attend his wife’s funeral, leaving many in tears. During the service, he was draped in a blanket that celebrated their longstanding love and marriage. The black and white blanket showcased a portrait of Rosalynn and Jimmy with the text “The Carters” and “Est. 1885” embroidered on it, honoring the town where they first met as children, Plains, Georgia.
Being the oldest living president at 98 years old, President Carter has dealt with several health issues over the years. In 2015, he triumphed over brain cancer, and in 2019, he underwent brain surgery to relieve mounting pressure. Despite these challenges, Carter’s spirit remains resilient.
According to a statement released by The Carter Center, President Carter has made the decision to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care rather than pursuing additional medical intervention. This decision has the full support of his family and medical team.
Jimmy Carter is not only a former president but also a retired peanut farmer, US Navy Lieutenant, and Sunday School teacher. He has been a long-time volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. Currently residing in Plains, Georgia, with his wife, Rosalynn, President Carter is the proud father of four children.
