Dreams Do Come True: 75-Year-Old Jane Sayner Becomes a Homeowner

Have you ever wished that the rental home you’ve lived in for years could become your very own? Well, that dream actually came true for 75-year-old Jane Sayner from St. Albans, Melbourne. After being a loyal tenant in a two-bedroom apartment for over two decades, something incredible happened that changed her life in the most unexpected way.

Jane's Garden

When John Perrett, the multimillionaire owner of the apartment, passed away in September 2020, Jane feared what the future held for her. She worried that her rental contract would be terminated, or even worse, that she would be forced to pay higher rent under a new landlord. But against all odds, something truly remarkable occurred. Jane, along with another long-term tenant, were given ownership of their apartments! Can you believe it?

John Perrett was known for being a generous and caring person, and he proved it even in his passing. Instead of leaving his properties to his family or selling them off, he decided to give them to the tenants who had been loyal to him for many years. For Jane, who had never imagined becoming a property owner at her age, it was an absolute dream come true. A dream she never dared to dream.

John’s story gets even more remarkable. After receiving a kidney transplant, he found himself with an enormous fortune. But instead of keeping it all to himself, he chose to make a difference. John donated a jaw-dropping AUD$18.6 million to the Royal Melbourne Hospital’s Nephrology Department. Additionally, he left one of his flats, which was sold for AUD$400,000, to the hospital.

Jane will always remember the day her life took an incredible turn. Out of the blue, John called her to share the news. He said, “My solicitor’s here, can you please give me your full name because I’m leaving you your unit.” Jane was in disbelief. She never expected such an incredible act of kindness.

While Jane was saddened by her landlord’s passing, she was also incredibly relieved and grateful to have a place she could finally call her own. Throughout the years, she had shown her love for the apartment by tending to the garden and planting beautiful flowers. To this day, her efforts continue to bloom and bring joy to her life.
