When you’ve lived as long as Elton John has and spent most of your life in the public eye, it’s no surprise that you have some stories to tell. And when it comes to the world of celebrity showbiz, there are levels of fame that separate the superstars from the rest. Elton John definitely falls into the superstar category, which is why his memoir, Me, caused quite a stir when it was released.
In his memoir, Elton John shared plenty of stories and revelations, but it was his words about the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson, that caught the attention of many. Elton recalled meeting Jackson when he was just a young boy and described him as “the most adorable kid you could imagine.” However, as the years went by, Elton noticed a change in Jackson, comparing it to how Elvis Presley became secluded from the world.
Elton believes that Jackson’s transformation was largely due to his prolonged use of prescription drugs. “God knows what was going on in his head, and God knows what prescription drugs he was being pumped full of,” Elton wrote. Every time Elton saw Jackson in his later years, he couldn’t help but think that “the poor guy had totally lost his marbles.” Elton emphasized that he meant this in a serious way, as Jackson was genuinely mentally ill and disturbing to be around.
Jackson’s life was marred by accusations of sexual abuse against minors, which became a constant dark cloud over his name. Elton simply stated that Jackson couldn’t seem to handle being around adults.
On a personal note, Elton John has been dealing with his own health issues lately. He had to postpone and reschedule many dates on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour until 2023 to focus on his recovery. Additionally, there were reports that Elton declined an offer to perform at King Charles’s coronation concert. Despite his previous performance at Princess Diana’s funeral, he won’t be appearing at this ceremony.
