Expanding Their Family: Alec and Hilaria Baldwin

Alec and Hilaria Baldwin faced backlash after welcoming their seventh child together

Expanding your family is always a joyful experience, especially when you’re with someone you love and are on the same page with. That’s the case for Alec Baldwin and Hilaria Baldwin, who have been growing their family together since their marriage in 2012.

The couple wasted no time starting a family, welcoming their first child in 2013. Over the years, they had four more children before adding a sixth child via a surrogate. And in April 2021, they announced that they were expecting their seventh child together, bringing even more happiness to their already wonderful family.

Hilaria shared the exciting news of their daughter’s arrival on her Instagram account. Along with a selection of pictures and videos, she wrote, “She’s here! We are so excited to introduce you to our tiny dream come true, Ilaria Catalina Irena.” This is Alec Baldwin’s eighth child overall but his seventh child with Hilaria. His oldest daughter, Ireland Baldwin, is from his previous marriage.

Their newest addition was born on September 22, 2022, weighing 6 lbs. and 13 ounces. Both mother and baby are happy and healthy. Hilaria expressed how thrilled their other children are about their new sister, sharing that they spent the day bonding and welcoming her into their home.

In an official birth announcement featured in People Magazine, the couple expressed their gratitude for welcoming their newest daughter into the world, describing the experience as magical and filled with love, just like every other child they have been blessed with.

While the Baldwin family is overjoyed with their growing family, not everyone understands their choice to have a large family. Hilaria addressed this in a recent post, where she humorously acknowledged the comments and questions by saying, “7th baby: when people ask or comment, we often go to silly and very self-deprecating jokes on my part. I love to laugh at myself—so it’s all good… keeps me sane. All jokes aside, however, I am grateful for this experience.”

She further explained her perspective on motherhood, acknowledging both the joys and the challenges it brings. Hilaria has learned to embrace the wonderful, the hard, the uncomfortable, the magical, and the unknown of this incredible journey of motherhood that she feels blessed to experience again and again.

While the couple celebrates the arrival of their new daughter, not everyone congratulated them. The unique name they chose for their seventh child, Ilaria Catalina Irena Baldwin, received criticism due to the controversy surrounding Hilaria’s alleged misrepresentation of her heritage. People questioned why she continued to use Spanish-origin names for her children despite not having Spanish descent.

Some social media comments referred to her as “fake Spanish” and expressed annoyance with supposed cultural appropriation. However, it’s worth noting that the name Ilaria is actually Italian for “Hilary” and has cheerful connotations. It was a popular Italian girl’s name in 2006.

What do you think about the Baldwins’ expanding family and their choice of names? We’d love to hear your thoughts.
