Children are fragile beings who require not only education and discipline but also love and compassion. This is especially true for children with special needs. Unfortunately, one mother’s excitement to see her 6-year-old son Caleb perform at his school’s Thanksgiving play turned into disappointment and outrage.
Caleb, who is mildly autistic, bravely approached the microphone towards the end of the play. His intention was to say something, but before he could, a teacher snatched the mic away from him. The heart-wrenching reaction from Caleb was simply, “Oh no!” followed by tears as he stood by the empty mic stand.
His devastated mother, Amanda Riddle from Nutter Fort, West Virginia, captured the incident on video and shared it online. The video quickly went viral, sparking widespread outrage and support for the grieving mother and her son.
The school responded to the incident by stating that their staff and teachers genuinely care about their students. They explained that Caleb had already delivered his part in the play, and a second “line” was not planned. However, parents everywhere were appalled by the teacher’s actions and questioned why she couldn’t have given Caleb a few extra seconds to say his simple three-word line, “gobble gobble gobble.”
As the controversy continues to unfold, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of empathy and understanding when working with children, especially those with special needs. It is essential to create an inclusive environment where all children feel valued and have the opportunity to express themselves.
