As a child, Anderson Cooper never thought he would have the opportunity to have children. Growing up as a gay individual, he thought that becoming a parent was simply out of his reach. Reflecting on his youth, Cooper shared, “When I was 12 years old and knew I was gay and thought about my life, it always upset me because I thought, ‘I will never be able to have a kid.’” Little did he know, life had wonderful surprises in store for him.
Fast forward forty years, and today, Cooper is beaming with pride as a father of two beautiful sons. In April 2020, he welcomed his first son, Wyatt Morgan, into the world. Cooper chose to honor his late father, Wyatt Emory Cooper, by naming his son after him. Furthermore, the name “Morgan” comes from his late mother, Gloria Vanderbilt’s side of the family.
The journey of parenthood has been nothing short of a roller-coaster ride for Cooper. Before Wyatt’s birth, he stocked up on numerous parenting books, but he admits with a smile that he never actually read them. Cooper humorously shared on Ellen DeGeneres’ EllenTube, “I got all these books about being a parent, and I didn’t read any of them. It turns out you actually have to read the books. Just buying the books themselves, and having them around doesn’t work. You actually have to read them.” Despite this revelation, Cooper expressed his love for every aspect of being a father.
Cooper is grateful for the support he receives on his parenting journey, especially from his ex-partner, Benjamin Maisani. Together, they co-parent Wyatt, forming an “unusual setup” but a loving and supportive family unit. Maisani’s commitment to fatherhood did not stop there. Cooper recently announced on his show, “Anderson Cooper 360,” that he and Maisani welcomed another child, Sebastian Luke Maisani-Cooper, into their home. Not only is Maisani adopting Wyatt, but he is also an exceptional dad to their newborn son.
Introducing Sebastian to the world, Cooper described him as a healthy and happy baby. He affectionately noted that even Sebastian’s hiccups are adorable. Cherishing the precious moments with his sons, Cooper expresses his gratitude for having the chance to be their father. He considers Maisani his best friend and partner in raising their children.
As a first-time parent, Cooper admits to feeling overwhelmed initially. However, with the arrival of Sebastian, he feels much more confident and calmer. Cooper plans to take some time off from work to fully immerse himself in the joys of fatherhood and cherish the time spent with his boys as they grow up.
