Martha Stewart’s Controversial Cocktail: Harmless or Tone-Deaf?

Martha Stewart, known and loved by fans worldwide, has found herself in the midst of controversy due to a recent social media post during her trip to Greenland. While the 82-year-old businesswoman and TV personality received praise earlier this year for her appearance in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue, her most recent Instagram photo has failed to garner the same positive response.

On August 29th, Stewart uploaded a picture of herself enjoying a cocktail on a cruise along the east coast of Greenland. The caption read, “End of the first zodiac cruise from @swanhelleniccruises into a very beautiful fjord on the east coast of Greenland. We actually captured a small iceberg for our cocktails tonight.”

Although Stewart most likely intended no harm with her post, it soon sparked criticism from followers who believed her use of a “small iceberg” for her drink was in bad taste. Many pointed out that referencing icebergs while the planet is grappling with the effects of climate change seemed insensitive.

Comments on Stewart’s post were flooded with disapproval. One Instagram user wrote, “Martha, the ice caps are melting. Don’t put them in your drink!” Another expressed their conflicted feelings, saying, “I generally love Martha and the luxuries she enjoys, but wealthy individuals drinking iceberg cocktails while the planet suffers… it’s a bit tone-deaf.”

The backlash continued, with one person sarcastically remarking, “So, as the climate warms due to the profits of a few billionaires, they vacation to melting icebergs, scoop them up, and use them to keep their cocktails cold. That sounds like a line from a dystopian novel. Can’t make this stuff up!”

One disgruntled follower shared, “Global warming and melting ice caps, but we need glacier ice for cocktails?! Talk about being tone-deaf. I’ve been a fan for years, but as I struggle to buy groceries, I’ve seen enough caviar lately that I’m out.”

Earlier this year, Stewart made history by confidently posing in daring swimsuits for the cover of Sports Illustrated. During an appearance on the Today show, she revealed her rigorous wellness routine which included refraining from bread and pasta for a couple of months and attending Pilates classes every other day. Stewart’s dedication to a clean and healthy lifestyle has inspired women of all ages.
