Reba McEntire, the beloved musician and actress, is known not just for her talent, but also for her down-to-earth personality. In a recent interview, Reba opened up about her family life and how her country upbringing influenced her parenting style.
Born and raised on a ranch in Chockie, Oklahoma, Reba is a true country girl at heart. Growing up, she was part of a family band and helped out with the cattle when she wasn’t in school. Her love for barrel racing was inspired by her father and grandfather, both renowned rodeo champions. It’s no wonder that Reba’s country roots have had a profound impact on her life.
“Mama and Daddy always taught me the importance of keeping your word,” Reba shared with People. “If you tell somebody you’re going to be somewhere at a certain time, you show up. That’s the way I was raised.”
When Reba became a mother to her son Shelby in 1990, she was already a famous figure. Despite her fame, she knew that raising a child in the spotlight would require careful navigation. She faced tough choices but always remained true to her principles.
“I never let Shelby win when we played games or cards,” Reba revealed. “I wanted him to learn and grow. I always told him, ‘I’ll always love you, but I want other people to like you too. So don’t be a little jerk. Don’t be a spoiled brat.’”
Shelby, who is now a successful race car driver, was raised to appreciate others and understand that no one is better than anyone else. Reba proudly shared, “A lot of people have told me you would never know he had been blessed with the life he was given.”
Before becoming a mother, Reba admits she was a bit more self-centered. But when Shelby came into her life, everything changed. She made sure to spend as much time with him as possible, taking him on the road and even flying back home after concerts to be with him for important moments.
Reba has also been vocal about her son’s ADHD and the challenges they faced. Shelby struggled with reading when he was younger, but now in his 30s, he devours books. “He’s always trying to improve and do better,” Reba proudly shared. “Shelby is a gift from God to me. We’re very close.”
Recently, Reba had another reason to celebrate as Shelby tied the knot with his wife Marissa in a fairytale-like wedding at Walt Disney World. Reba couldn’t be happier for her son and his new chapter in life.
Reba’s parenting approach is one that emphasizes love, respect, and instilling the values of humility and hard work. She reminds us all that no matter how famous or successful we become, it’s essential to stay true to ourselves and raise our children to be kind, genuine individuals.
