One day, while a kind-hearted Thai man was returning home from work, he noticed a small animal on the street. As he approached it, he realized that it was a kitten, but there was something different about it. This little creature had not been meowing like a regular cat. It was mute since birth. In fact, as it developed, it became increasingly clear that it was an entirely different species of mammal. The fishing cat is a wild cat that can grow to be twice the size of a conventional cat. It is known for its love of hunting and eating fish. This particular species of cat, scientifically known as Prionailurus viverrinus, is native to South and Southeast Asia. Sadly, fishing cat populations have been declining rapidly due to the destruction of their wetland habitats.
The fishing cat has a distinctive appearance with smooth, gray-gray fur that is regularly spaced across its body. Its back is brown and adorned with tiny, evenly spaced, longitudinal rows of black or dark brown markings. The cat has long legs that taper to somewhat webbed toes, equipped with sharp claws that are only partially retractable. An adult fishing cat can have a body length of 75-86 cm, a tail length of 25-33 cm, and weigh between 8-14 kg.
Despite the challenges that fishing cats face, Simba, as the man decided to call him, is lucky to be alive and thriving. However, the survival of not just Simba, but of all fishing cats, is crucial for the future of their species. Poaching and retribution killing pose significant threats to fishing cat populations, with one study reporting an 84% mortality rate in Thailand.
