With the way the world is today, it’s hardly a surprise many people are forced to work tirelessly just to make ends meet. We often hear stories about those few individuals who seem to take advantage of the system, but there are countless others who work hard every day, putting in long hours to pay their way in life. Bethany Provencher is one of these hardworking individuals—a single mom who recently moved to St. Charles, Illinois with her 11-year-old son for a fresh start.
Bethany signed a lease for a new apartment in town and was grateful to secure a job at a local IHOP, drawing from her 25 years of experience in customer service. However, she knew that financially, things would be tight for a while. She hadn’t been able to properly furnish her new apartment due to a lack of funds.
Then, one day, something incredible happened. A celebrity couple walked into the IHOP where Bethany was working and sat in her section. To her surprise, the man was none other than singer-songwriter Donnie Wahlberg, accompanied by his wife, Jenny McCarthy. Bethany couldn’t contain her excitement. Donnie Wahlberg’s band, New Kids on the Block, was one of her favorites, and she had always had a special fondness for Donnie himself.
Bethany was thrilled to be serving Donnie and his family. Little did she know, this encounter would have a profound impact on her life. After finishing their lunch, Donnie paid the $35.27 check and left a special message for Bethany on the receipt. Alongside a hand-drawn smiley face, it read, “Thanks, Bethany, Happy New Year. 2020 Tip Challenge.”
Donnie asked Bethany not to open the receipt until he and his wife had left the IHOP. Curiosity consumed her, but she followed his request. When she finally unfolded the receipt, she was left in absolute disbelief. Donnie had left her and her coworkers a tip amounting to a staggering $2,020!
