Meet Spike, a 14-year-old English Springer Spaniel who, like many older dogs, faced mobility challenges due to age-related health issues. After suffering a second stroke, he found it difficult to navigate the stairs, which meant he could no longer partake in one of his favorite activities: sleeping in bed with his family.
Since he was a puppy, Spike had always slept on his owners’ bed. However, with their bedroom located on the second floor, Spike could no longer reach his cherished spot. Despite his weakened state, he persistently tried to make it up the stairs, prompting his family to block access to prevent any injury.
But this loving family found a beautiful solution. If Spike couldn’t come upstairs, they would come downstairs and sleep with him! They took turns setting up a pull-out couch in the living room to keep Spike company throughout the night.
Upon returning from university, Catherine, Spike’s owner, discovered her parents’ new sleeping arrangement. However, it didn’t surprise her, as their bond with Spike had always been strong. Catherine shared, “They’re absolutely inseparable. My dad calls him ‘old bean’ and they’re always chatting away.”
Catherine’s father goes the extra mile by bringing Spike water and food to the sofa. He even hand-feeds him to ensure Spike takes his medications and maintains his strength. It’s evident that Spike’s family will do whatever it takes to make his final years as joyful and comfortable as possible.
