The story of the “penis snake” started in the late 1800s when Sir Graham Hales discovered it during an expedition with Sir Brian Doll. However, it wasn’t until 1968 that the creature was first described and given its scientific name. In 2011, it was rediscovered by scientists in the Amazonas.
During an examination of a hydroelectric dam, a family of the phallic-shaped creatures was found at the bottom of the Madeira River when it was drained. Julian Tupan, a biologist involved in the dam construction, stated that not much is known about these unique amphibians. Out of the six collected, one died, three were released back into the wild, and two were kept for further study.
