Weather Worries? Invest in Flood Protection with Aquadams

We all know that the weather has become more unpredictable in recent years. From warm winters in the Northeast to scorching summers in the Pacific Northwest, it’s hard to know what to expect. This also means that unexpected flooding is becoming a more common occurrence. Just ask the residents of the Southwest, who experienced unusually heavy flooding in 2016, resulting in the loss of homes and possessions.

But one resident in Texas had the foresight to invest in protecting his home before disaster struck. Randy Wagner, a resident of Rosharon, Texas, made the decision to protect his home from flooding by investing in an Aquadam. Some neighbors thought he was crazy, but when the floods came, they quickly realized that he had made a wise choice.

What is an Aquadam, you ask? It’s a DIY flood protection system that can be easily installed around the perimeter of a house. Despite living in a mostly dry area, Randy knew that it was better to be safe than sorry. So, when he heard warnings of an impending flood from the Brazos River Authority, he drove all the way to Louisiana to pick up his Aquadam.

The device consisted of approximately 400 feet of plastic and fabric tubing, standing at a height of 30 inches. It was filled with water to create a barrier against the floodwater. While some may have scoffed at Randy’s choice, he knew that it was a small investment compared to the potential damage that could be done to his home.

When the floodwaters came, thousands of homes in Brazoria County were evacuated, and many were lost entirely. Randy’s home, however, remained unharmed. While his neighbors had to deal with the devastation of flooded homes, Randy and his family watched from the safety of their dry home, protected by the Aquadam.

“I was the crazy guy,” Randy admits. “Everybody was laughing at me. But now they’re impressed with this Aquadam.”

Aquadams may not be the most traditional method of flood prevention, but they have proven to be effective in saving homeowners and insurance companies thousands of dollars in damages. These lightweight and quiet devices have been used in various areas with consistent success.
