How Michael Bublé’s Son’s Cancer Diagnosis Changed Him

Michael Bublé says son's cancer diagnosis changed him "in a big way"

When you think of Canadian singer Michael Bublé, you probably imagine his silky smooth voice and magnetic stage presence. But behind the scenes, he’s been facing one of the biggest challenges of his life – his son’s battle with cancer. In 2016, Bublé’s world was turned upside down when his young son Noah was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma, a form of liver cancer, at just 3 years old. Understandably, Bublé and his wife, Argentinean actress Luisana Lopilato, put their lives and careers on hold to focus on their son’s health.

“Everyone understood in my world what my priority was,” Bublé shared with People. “We all go through things. You just hope you learn something about yourself and you learn something about the people with you.” It was a time of immense vulnerability for Bublé, leading him to take a break from recording and touring. His wife also paused her career to support their son during this difficult period.

Thankfully, after undergoing chemotherapy, Noah’s condition started to improve. In February 2018, it was reported that he was on the mend. Then, at the age of 5, he went into remission after undergoing surgery and further chemotherapy. Bublé explained that these trying circumstances had a profound impact on him. “You don’t go through big things in your life, dramatic things like I’ve gone through or my wife has gone through without it having an effect on you,” he shared.

While Bublé has been fiercely protective of his son’s privacy and has not revealed specific details about Noah’s treatment, he did talk about his son’s cancer journey on “The Late Late Show with James Corden” back in 2018. Holding back tears, Bublé expressed that Noah’s story was incredibly difficult to talk about and expressed gratitude to Jesus Christ for their son’s remission. Describing the experience, he said, “When this all started, I became the strength to somehow pull us and lift us and to be positive. And when they got [the cancer] out, and the chemo was done, and they said, ‘We did it, it’s good, he’s OK,’ I fell. I just fell.”

Through the emotional rollercoaster, Bublé found solace in his wife’s unwavering support. “My wife picks me up now,” he tearfully shared. In addition, he marveled at Noah’s resilience and lovingly called him his real superhero, emphasizing that superheroes like Superman and Spiderman, despite being beloved by children, were mere fictional characters compared to his son.

Having married Luisana in 2011, Bublé is a proud father of four children. He cherishes his role as a dad and understands the importance of family. “Soak up every single minute. Look at the world through their eyes because they have this sense of wonderment,” Bublé advised all parents with young children. “If you miss it, you’ll be searching for that feeling for the rest of your life.”

With Noah’s health on the mend, Bublé has also been focusing on his career. Earlier this year, he released his eleventh studio album, “Higher.” The four-time Grammy winner is set to tour in Great Britain in 2023 and is eagerly awaiting the opportunity to create a true arena spectacle. Despite the hardships he’s faced, Bublé remains hopeful and excited for what the future holds.
