Did you know that the chances of giving birth to twins have increased by 72 percent from 1980 to 2018? It’s quite rare, with only about 33 out of every 1,000 births resulting in twins. And when it comes to identical twins, the odds are even lower, with approximately three or four out of every 1,000 births being identical twins.
For 23-year-old Savannah Combs, finding out she was pregnant with twins was a thrilling moment. But then she received another surprise: both of her precious babies had Down syndrome. While some might have been concerned, Savannah saw their condition as something that made them even more unique and beautiful.
Savannah shared her journey with her twins, Kennadi Rue and Mckenli Ackerman, on TikTok, where they quickly gained a following. In one of her videos, she revealed that she was advised to abort her babies because they wouldn’t make it. However, she made the courageous decision to give them a fighting chance.
Every prenatal appointment where the twins were alive was a blessing for Savannah. And when she discovered that they both had Down syndrome, her husband was away at boot camp. She was admitted to the hospital at 29 weeks and delivered her daughters, who had to spend several weeks in the NICU before coming home.
“These mono di twins had their own sacs but shared the same placenta, which made them identical,” Savannah explained. “Having mo di twins is already rare, but adding Down syndrome on top makes it like one in 2 million.”
Despite their rare condition, Savannah sees her daughters as normal children with feelings, beating hearts, and the ability to learn and grow. She knows they might be a step behind, but she firmly believes that with determination, they will achieve their goals.
Unfortunately, Savannah and her family have faced criticism from some insensitive individuals on social media. But Savannah has a perfect response for them: “Good thing they weren’t born to you and were born to me. God knew what he was doing by giving these babies to the right parents who would love them regardless.”
