Former President Jimmy Carter has spoken out for the first time following the death of his beloved wife, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, at the age of 96. The Carter Center confirmed that Rosalynn, who had been under hospice care, passed away on November 19, six months after being diagnosed with dementia.
Rosalynn Carter was not only a First Lady but also a dedicated humanitarian, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of charitable work. Tributes from all over the world have poured in to honor her memory, but none will be as poignant as that of her devoted husband, Jimmy Carter.
Rosalynn peacefully passed away at their home in Plains, Georgia. The couple, who had been married since 1946, served together in the White House from 1977 to 1981. Despite leaving the political spotlight, both Jimmy and Rosalynn continued to make a significant impact through their work at the Carter Center.
Sadly, both Rosalynn and Jimmy’s health had been declining over the past year. Jimmy Carter himself entered hospice care in February, declining further medical intervention for various health issues. Last week, Rosalynn joined him after her dementia diagnosis.
The Carter Center released a statement saying, “Former first lady Rosalynn Carter has entered hospice care at home. She and President Carter are spending time with each other and their family. The Carter family continues to ask for privacy and remains grateful for the outpouring of love and support.”
Tragically, Rosalynn’s passing occurred less than 48 hours after she returned to her and Jimmy’s childhood home, where they had shared countless memories together.
In his heartfelt statement, Jimmy Carter described Rosalynn as his “equal partner” and expressed his appreciation for her unwavering support throughout their lives. “Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished,” he said. “She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me.”
Their love story began back in 1946 when they married. Jimmy Carter’s involvement in the military and his subsequent career in politics were marked by Rosalynn’s unwavering presence by his side. She was not only his wife but also his trusted advisor. As Rosalynn Carter once said, “We developed a partnership when we were working in the farm supply business, and it continued when Jimmy got involved in politics. I knew more on paper about the business than he did. He would take my advice about things.”
