As parents, our main goal is to protect our children and keep them safe. But there are moments in life when we feel powerless, like watching our child suffer and not being able to do anything about it. This is a story of Magalli Jimenez, a brave mother who faced the unimaginable.
The journey began with the birth of a beautiful girl named Ava Skye. The first year of her life was filled with joy and happiness. However, everything changed when Ava turned 13 months old. Magalli noticed her daughter in pain and took her to the doctor. The devastating diagnosis came – Ava had muscle cancer, a condition that not only hindered her physical development but also caused immense pain.
Magalli knew she had to be strong for her baby girl and prepared for the battle ahead. The oncologist provided a treatment plan, and Magalli remained hopeful. She watched as her little one endured painful chemotherapy sessions, wishing she could take her place. After multiple rounds of treatment, Skye was declared to be in remission, bringing immense joy to the family. However, their happiness was short-lived when they received devastating news – Skye’s cancer had relapsed.
In July 2022, the family learned that Skye’s cancer was treatment resistant, leaving surgery as the only option. But due to Skye’s young age, the chances of recovery were slim. The family was crushed. Magalli realized that she would only have a few precious days or weeks with her daughter. She watched as Skye’s condition deteriorated, seeing her go from a healthy toddler to a weak child who could barely walk or talk.
With a heavy heart, Magalli made the difficult decision to admit Skye to hospice care, ensuring her final days would be as comfortable as possible. While tears often overwhelmed Magalli in private moments, she made it a point to only greet her daughter with smiles and laughter. “We will just let her live her life and enjoy her and do all the things that we’ve ever wanted to do with her. We’ve made a bucket list for her,” Magalli said.
In a beautiful display of support, Magalli’s friend, Davina Galvan, started a GoFundMe page to help raise funds for Skye’s bucket list. The goal was set at $5,000, allowing Magalli to fulfill all the dreams and wishes her daughter had. The love and support poured in from kind-hearted individuals who wanted to contribute to Skye’s happiness.
On August 22, 2022, Skye took her last breath in her mother’s arms. Magalli held her tight, heartbroken yet relieved that her little girl was finally free from pain. The day before her passing, Skye, with all her strength, sang her favorite song to her mother, looking into her eyes. With a fragile voice, she sang, “I love you. You love me. We are a happy family. With a great big hug and a kiss kiss.” This precious moment was captured on video, a testament to the pure and loving soul that Skye was till the very end.
Magalli shared this heart-wrenching video with the world, giving everyone a glimpse into the beautiful bond between a mother and her child. She wanted the world to see the incredible strength and love that Skye possessed, even during her last hours. “My heart will forever be broken, it will never be the same, but I promised her that I would live for her. Hug your kiddos a little harder today, even when they drive you insane,” Magalli expressed.
