At the age of 18, Sky Castner has achieved something truly remarkable – she has been accepted into the prestigious Harvard University. From the moment Sky’s father picked her up from the jail to raise her as a single parent, her mother played no significant role in her life. Despite facing frequent relocations, Sky’s father has been her rock, ensuring that she never lost sight of her dreams. Their bond and the love and sacrifice of a single parent have laid the foundation for Sky’s success.
Sky’s academic achievements have been nothing short of exceptional. From a young age, she displayed a passion for learning and excelled academically, even in her early years. Teachers at Reaves Elementary recognized her potential and provided her with additional mentoring through CISD’s Project Mentor. It was through this program that Sky met Mona Hamby, who would become her mentor and play a significant role in shaping her future.
Mona Hamby, Sky’s mentor, remembers the vibrant and determined young girl who showed immense promise from the beginning. Mona went above and beyond, providing guidance and support beyond the classroom. She taught Sky valuable life lessons and helped her navigate the challenges she faced. Their bond grew stronger as they realized they both had absent mothers in their lives. Thanks to Mona’s dedication and belief in Sky, she was given the tools to reach for the stars.
Sky’s interest in attending Harvard blossomed after a visit to the campus with Mona and her husband in 2022. Inspired by the surroundings and captivated by the possibilities, Sky sought advice from Professor James Wallace of Boston University on how to make her application stand out. With his guidance, she effectively conveyed her unique story and experiences to the admissions committee.
