The Boston Athletic Association, custodian of the esteemed Boston Marathon, expressed their heartfelt condolences upon learning of Dick Hoyt’s passing. Rick Hoyt: Overcoming Challenges with Courage

Rick Hoyt, born in 1962, faced the obstacles of cerebral palsy as a quadriplegic incapable of movement or speech. In his father’s moving memoir, “Devoted: The Story of a Father’s Love for His Son” (2010), Dick Hoyt beautifully described their unique communication:

“We had long since learned how to read our son’s grins and nods. But even though everyone in the family was skilled at figuring out what Rick needed, we were still only making educated guesses.”

In 1972, hope arrived for the Hoyt family when engineers from Tufts University developed a groundbreaking computer. This remarkable invention allowed Rick to select letters by simply touching his skull. The first words Rick communicated were “Go Bruins,” a testament to his unyielding enthusiasm for sports.
