Sahar Tabar, a 19-year-old Iranian woman who underwent numerous plastic surgeries to resemble Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie, captured the online world’s attention and sparked intense debate. Now known as “Iran’s Zombie Angelina Jolie,” Sahar’s story has taken an unexpected turn as she is released from jail after serving a ten-year sentence.
Striving for a New Look
Sahar Tabar embarked on a quest to enhance her appearance, undergoing more than 50 surgeries. Although she never explicitly stated her desire to become Angelina Jolie’s doppelganger, her fans quickly made the connection. Sahar’s social media photos showcased her altered features, including gaunt cheekbones, plumped and angular lips, and a noticeably different nose. Yet, there are doubts surrounding the authenticity of these surgeries, as some believe the images may have been heavily edited or digitally altered.
Unexpected Fame in the Digital World
Sahar Tabar found fame through her unique and unconventional appearance, capturing attention on social media platforms. At one point, her Instagram account had nearly four million followers under the handle @sahartabarofficial. Although this account has been removed, it served as a space for Sahar to express herself and gain attention, despite her mother’s disapproval of the shocking images resembling Angelina Jolie.
Art and Self-Expression
In an interview with the Russian website Sputnik, Sahar Tabar clarified that her intention was never to become a carbon copy of Angelina Jolie. “Every time I publish a photo, I paint my face in an increasingly funny way,” she stated. “My fans know this is not my true face. I never aimed to look like Jolie or any character, but I see myself as a muse rather than an imitation.”
Controversy and Imprisonment
Tabar’s journey took a dark turn when she was arrested in October 2019 for allegedly sharing blasphemous Instagram photos. She faced several charges, including illegally purchasing property, inciting violence, negatively influencing youth, earning money through unethical means, and violating the country’s strict dress code for women. Despite her young age, Sahar Tabar received an unexpectedly harsh prison sentence of ten years and was imprisoned in Qarchak, renowned as Iran’s most severe women’s prison.
The Cry for Help and New Beginnings
In light of Sahar’s plight, Iranian activist Masih Alinejad reached out to the renowned Angelina Jolie for support. Alinejad highlighted Sahar Tabar’s young age and her desperate mother’s plea for her release. “Angelina Jolie, we need your opinion. Please assist us,” Alinejad implored. The activist’s plea aimed to shed light on Sahar’s challenging situation and gather the necessary attention for her eventual release.
Freedom at Last
After spending 14 long months behind bars, Sahar Tabar has finally been released. Her release comes amid the tragic death of Mahsa Amini, who was arrested and brutally beaten by Iranian police for not adhering to the strict hijab regulations. While Sahar’s unique story continues to captivate many, her release brings a glimmer of hope and relief to those who have followed her remarkable journey of transformation and redemption.
