The Extraordinary Story of Jo Ann Ussery: Turning a Boeing 727 into a Dream Home

Have you ever dreamed of living in a unique and unconventional home? Jo Ann Ussery, a fascinating woman with an adventurous spirit, turned her imagination into reality by transforming a Boeing 727 airliner into a one-of-a-kind residence. Her remarkable journey is a testament to human ingenuity and the power of pursuing our dreams.

A Unique Vision Takes Flight

In the early 2000s, Jo Ann purchased a retired Boeing 727 plane with the intention of creating a home like no other. Instead of letting the plane go to waste, she saw its potential and embarked on an ambitious endeavor to convert it into a comfortable living space. Her dedication to her vision knew no bounds.

The Transformation Begins

With meticulous planning and relentless determination, Jo Ann painstakingly designed and restored the interior of the airplane. She transformed the cabins into a warm and unique house, facing challenges along the way. Her unwavering commitment paid off, and today her Boeing 727 home stands proudly as a testament to her singular vision and perseverance.

A Monument to Ingenuity

Located in the serene setting of the woods, Jo Ann’s Boeing 727 residence has garnered international attention and praise. It represents the innovative spirit and the ability to think outside the box when it comes to finding unique housing solutions. Jo Ann’s extraordinary story is an inspiration to anyone with a desire or passion, proving that with devotion and ingenuity, the sky is truly the limit.

From Homelessness to Homeownership

Jo Ann’s journey began in 1993 when her home in Benoit, Mississippi was destroyed. As a widow with two children and limited funds, finding a new place to live seemed impossible. It was then that a unique idea was proposed by her in-law, Bob – living on a plane.

Intrigued by the concept, Jo Ann visited a disassembled Boeing 727 and fell in love with the idea. She purchased the plane for a mere $2,000, including shipping, and affectionately named it “Little Trump.” With a budget of less than $30,000, she embarked on the challenging task of making it into a functional living space.

Converting Dreams into Reality

To ensure stability during the renovation process, Jo Ann placed the plane on her property with its nose pointing out over a lake, securing the tail with a substantial amount of concrete. With an interior space of approximately 1,500 square feet, she wasted no time in revamping the airplane.

Despite the non-functioning windows, Jo Ann’s resourcefulness made the lack of natural light inconsequential. She created three bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and even a laundry facility within the plane. The cockpit was transformed into a luxurious master bathroom, offering a soaking tub and a breathtaking view of the lake.

One Woman’s Triumph

Remarkably, Jo Ann completed the entire renovation herself. From 1995 to 1999, she happily lived aboard her converted plane, cherishing the uniqueness and comfort it provided. Eventually, she made the decision to transform her home into a public museum.

Unfortunately, during the relocation process for display, the plane slipped off the carriage and disintegrated. However, Jo Ann’s ingenious and determined spirit left an indelible mark on the world of unique housing, inspiring others to think outside the box and turn their dreams into reality.

Jo Ann Ussery’s extraordinary story serves as a reminder that age is no barrier to pursuing our passions and seizing opportunities. With determination and creativity, we can build remarkable lives and shape our own destinies.
