From Plane to Home

Jo Ann Ussery’s quest began in the early 2000s when she purchased a defunct Boeing 727 plane. Instead of scrapping the aircraft, she saw its potential as a unique living space and embarked on an ambitious endeavor to convert it into a suitable home.

The Transformation Begins

With meticulous planning and unwavering dedication, Jo Ann designed and restored the interior, turning the airplane’s cabins into a warm and distinctive house. The project came with its challenges, but her perseverance and vision paid off in the end.

An Iconic Home in the Woods

Today, Jo Ann Ussery’s Boeing 727 residence stands as a testament to her singular vision and perseverance. Nestled in the woods, this one-of-a-kind edifice has garnered international attention and praise.

Inspiring Ingenuity and Imagination

When it comes to finding unique housing solutions, Jo Ann’s Boeing 727 home represents ingenuity and the capacity to think outside the box. Her extraordinary tale serves as inspiration to everyone who has a desire or passion, demonstrating that the sky is truly the limit when it comes to turning aspirations into reality with devotion and ingenuity.

A Journey of Hope and Resilience

Jo Ann Ussery’s journey began in 1993 when her home in Benoit, Mississippi was devastated. As a widow with limited funds and two children, finding a new place to live was a daunting challenge.

A Unique Proposal

In her search for a solution, Jo Ann initially considered buying a trailer but soon realized it wouldn’t accommodate her large family. It was then that her in-law, Bob, an air traffic controller, suggested something unique – living on a plane.

Love at First Sight

Intrigued by the idea, Jo Ann visited a disassembled Boeing 727 and instantly fell in love. She purchased it for a mere $2,000, shipping included. She affectionately named her new home “Little Trump” after discovering that Donald Trump also owned a private Boeing 727.

Bringing her Vision to Life

With a budget of less than $30,000, Jo Ann embarked on the challenging task of transforming the plane into a functional living space. To ensure stability during the interior renovations, she placed the plane on her property, with its nose pointing out over a serene lake. The tail was secured with a substantial amount of concrete.

Turning Dreams into Reality

With an interior space of around 1,500 square feet, Jo Ann wasted no time in revamping the airplane’s interior. Despite the non-functioning windows, she found a way to overcome this challenge by installing air conditioning, making it inconsequential. She created three bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and even a laundry facility within the plane.

The Showstopper: Master Bathroom in the Cockpit

One of Jo Ann’s most impressive transformations was turning the cockpit into a luxurious master bathroom with a soaking tub. The layout was designed to give users a sense of floating while they enjoyed the stunning view of the lake.

A Story of One Woman’s Determination

Remarkably, Jo Ann completed the entire renovation herself. From 1995 to 1999, she happily lived aboard her converted plane. Eventually, she made the decision to transform it into a public museum.

Leaving a Lasting Legacy

Unfortunately, during the process of relocating it for display, the plane slipped off the carriage and disintegrated. Despite this setback, Jo Ann Ussery’s ingenuity and determination have left an indelible mark on the world of unique housing.
