The Extraordinary Boeing 727 Home: A Story of Courage and Innovation

Are you ready to be amazed? Let us introduce you to the incredible Jo Ann Ussery and her extraordinary housing adventure. Jo Ann, an adventurous and passionate individual, turned an old Boeing 727 airplane into a remarkable and unconventional home. Her story is a testament to human ingenuity and the ability to make dreams come true.

In the early 2000s, Jo Ann purchased a retired Boeing 727 plane. Instead of selling it for parts, she saw the potential to create a unique living space. With unwavering dedication and a clear vision in mind, she embarked on the ambitious endeavor of transforming the plane into a cozy home.

Designing and restoring the interior of the plane came with its fair share of challenges, but Jo Ann’s determination paid off. She transformed the airplane cabins into a warm and distinctive house, showcasing her creativity and craftsmanship. Today, her Boeing 727 residence stands proudly in the midst of tranquil woods, capturing the attention and admiration of people from all over the world.

What makes Jo Ann’s story even more inspiring is the journey that led her to this unconventional housing solution. After her home was devastated in 1993, Jo Ann, a widow with two children and limited funds, faced the daunting task of finding a new place to live. Initially considering a trailer, she discovered it wouldn’t accommodate her large family. That’s when her in-law Bob, an air traffic controller, suggested a truly unique idea – living on a plane.

Intrigued by the concept, Jo Ann went to see a disassembled Boeing 727 and couldn’t help but fall in love with it. Purchasing the plane for just $2,000, shipping included, she affectionately named her new home “Little Trump,” as Donald Trump himself owned a private Boeing 727. With a budget of less than $30,000, she began the challenging task of transforming the plane into a functional living space.

Overcoming obstacles, Jo Ann placed the plane on her property with its nose extended over a peaceful lake, ensuring stability during the interior renovations. Despite the plane’s non-functioning windows, the presence of air conditioning made this issue inconsequential. With about 1,500 square feet of space to work with, Jo Ann wasted no time in revamping the interior. She created three bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and even a laundry facility within the plane.

But the most breathtaking transformation was the cockpit itself, which Jo Ann turned into a luxurious master bathroom with a soaking tub. The unique layout gave users the sensation of floating while enjoying the breathtaking view of the lake. Impressively, Jo Ann completed the entire renovation independently.

From 1995 to 1999, Jo Ann happily lived aboard her converted plane. Eventually, she made the decision to transform it into a public museum. During the relocation process, however, the plane slipped off its carriage and disintegrated. Despite this setback, Jo Ann’s ingenuity and determination left an indelible mark on the world of unique housing.

Jo Ann Ussery’s incredible story serves as an inspiration to everyone who has a desire or a passion. It reminds us that with dedication and ingenuity, there are no limits to what we can achieve. So, next time you come across a unique housing solution, remember Jo Ann’s story and the incredible power of imagination and perseverance.
