‘Beautiful Soul’ Newlywed Killed by Machete-Handling Man While Working at Dollar Tree

On Sunday, a machete-wielding guy entered a Dollar Tree store in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, and killed 22-year-old newlywed Keris Riebel. Riebel was working at the store situated at 1120 Wyandot Ave. at about 4:25 p.m., according to Upper Sandusky Police.

When the man, Bethel Bekele, 27, entered the business holding a machete. Bekele allegedly approached Riebel and attacked her with the weapon several times, killing her.

Officers responded to reports of a guy with a machete inside the store attacking an employee. Riebel was already dead when they arrived. Officers found the suspect in the 100 block of South Fifth Street, sitting in a parked automobile near the Wyandot County Sheriff’s Office.

When cops approached him, Bekele surrendered and was detained and charged with murder.

The motive for the attack remains unknown, and authorities are looking into whether Riebel and Bekele knew each other. The incident shocked the neighborhood, with one person saying, “It’s frightening to see something like this in Upper Sandusky because this is a wonderful community.”

Riebel’s family is mourning her death, with her aunt starting a GoFundMe to help pay burial expenses and lost income for Riebel’s husband, Jordan Riebel, who is taking time off to mourn.

Riebel recently graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Human Resources and was excited to begin her career. According to her aunt, Riebel and Jordan were looking forward to starting their new life with children and a puppy.

Their future, however, was “torn away from them both in a matter of seconds.”

Riebel was recalled as a “wonderful spirit with a faith-filled heart” by Wynford Local Schools, where she graduated in 2019. She treated everyone with real warmth, and her grin was unforgettable. Keris was gone far too soon and will live on in the hearts of the Wynford community for the rest of their lives.

” The death of such a brilliant and promising young woman is incredibly tragic, and our hearts go out to her husband, family, and loved ones during this difficult time. It is unclear whether Bekele has filed a plea or hired an attorney to represent him.
