Director and actor Lee Strasberg encouraged struggling young actor Pacino at the time to just “adapt to his new environment,” but Pacino agreed that it is not that simple.

“I had some trauma,” Pacino explained. “I went to counseling five days a week for 25 years.”

The actor was aware that his character in The Godfather II, Michael Corleone, was depressed.

In the film The Humbling, he played an aging actor who was having an affair with a younger woman.

“The character is getting older, and the sentiments he has for his job are becoming less available to him,” the speaker added. “So he attempts to compensate, gets a little confused, and slides into a type of sadness that reflects in his work.”

He was initially lured to the part because of the character’s “tragic collapse,” he explains.

The actor admitted to having had challenges in the past, but lately stated that he considers himself “lucky” and “spared” for not having faced the challenges that some of his colleagues have and continue to face.

“I might feel depressed, but I’m not sure,” he stated at the Venice Film Festival.

“People can suffer from depression, which is dreadful, can last a long period, and is really unpleasant.”

“I’m aware of it because I’ve previously experienced similar symptoms, though not to the same extent.” “I feel lucky and safe.”

The untimely death of Robin Williams in 2014 raised worries about the actor’s mental health.

Pacino attempted to reduce his workload in the 1980s by appearing in fewer films.

“It was beneficial for me,” he stated of his time away from the camera. It was entertaining for me. But the funds will soon run out.”
